Configuring network

Hello, after resolving lilo problem a new one is here. I have a modem -router ethernet Adsl which address is 192.168.1.1. A DHCP server is also enabled (in Windows all work perfect). In many tutorial on the net I have seen that I need to configure my network on Slackware using tools like pppoE or similar but, I remember, when I was in my last house, my friend and me had also a router-modem ethernet perfectly running on Slackware, but we didn t made any configuration, we simply put dhcpcd daemon in /etc/rc.d/rc.modules in order to be started at Slackware boot. Now I can't access internet, dhcpcd fails to assign any IP address, I tried to give to eth0 a static address 192.168.1.2 and "route add default gw 192.168.1.1" but it refuses to ping the router (192.168.1.1 - static address assigned in router configuration). How is the way to configure network without tools like pppoE (I hate it, I wish to learn, primary, then to do handmade configuration, otherwise I should install Mandriva )??
Thanks, guys

Well you 100% do not want PPPoE, it's not going to make it too easy and stop you learning at all.. it's just for a totally different kind of connection. you only need to care about a LAN with DHCP and nothign else whatsoever. now you say you added dhcp to rc.modules? that doesn't make sense. you would add the driver for your nic to rc.modules, not that's got nothign to do with actally getting a network connection going. under slack you'd apparently be looking at the rc.inet1.conf file to hold the fact that you wish to use dhcp: http://www.slackware.com/config/network.php
