configuring lilo for an additional distribution?

Hi,
I'd like to test a distribution (debian sid) and I have a question concerning booting.
Which entry has to be done in my lilo.conf to add the debian partition (hda7)? Is it the same entry like the entry for slackware, but instead of root = /dev/hda1, it is root = /dev/hda7?

In addition how do I create a boot disk generally?

this is one of the big reasons lilo isn't very good.

lilo operates relevant to the current file system, rather than the hardware layout.

this means that if you want to be able to start with a new kernel image (i.e. when booting to sid) this kernel image will need to be (temporarily) available to your current system in order to update the MBR.

typically i'd suggest mounting the other boot partition :

mount /dev/hdb3 /mnt/sidboot

and then in your lilo.conf you would reference /mnt/sidboot/vmlinuz-2.4.23 (for example)

these changes are only required when you actually run "lilo" itself in a console to update the settings, after this mount, these mounts are not important.

if you want to use a bootloader that does these things logically, try grub.

This is why lilo is better than grub ;-)
Just add the following in /etc/lilo.conf

other = dev/hda7
label = Debian

Save it and run lilo. Simple as that.

Of course have Debian install it's bootloader to its own root partition and not MBR.
