Configuring after install

I have installed Slackware 8.1 from a magazine cover disc on my Compaq Armada 1520 laptop. The install seemed to proceed well. I can now boot up and log-in as either root or mike. However, after entering 'startx' I get an error message as follows :
Fatal screen error :
No screens found

The previous line in the log :
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

I presume I need to reconfigure the monitor. Have tried XFree86 -configure but this has made no difference.

The relevant section of the XF86Config.new file reads :

Section : Monitor
Identifier "Monitor0"
Vendor name "Monitor Vendor"
Monitor name "Monitor model"
End Section

Section Screen
Identifier "Screen0"
Device "Card0"
Monitor "Monitor0"
Subsection "Display"
Depth 1
End subSection
Subsection "Display"
Depth 4
End subSection
Subsection "Display"
Depth 8
End subSection
Subsection "Display"
Depth 15
End subSection
Subsection "Display"
Depth 16
End subSection
Subsection "Display"
Depth 24
End subSection
End section

Can anyone advise what I need to do next?

Cheers, Mike Davies

Dunno if the command in 8.1 is the same as in 9.1 but I had to run xf86config to configure X server after installation.
There is some info at http://www.slackware.com/book/index....tml#XF86CONFIG

Isn't that an older laptop? You'll have to list more of XF86Config than that... My guess is that it's either your monitor refresh rates, color depth or resolution that is keeping you from launching X.... Might want to run 'xf86config' and maybe try 800x600 as a max res. try color depth of 16 as a default and give yourself a wider refresh rate range..... You'll have to play around with it some... Once it's up and running try to incrementally bump stuff up to find the breaking point...
