I had same problem with programs that ran successfully before. They may have been stored temporarily on a flash drive (FAT) and moved back in, or the system was restored with Image for Linux, but have no way of knowing what was the cause.

I tried
Code:
sh configure
and it worked except with errors. So I unpacked the tar.gz and it ran with ./configure with no errors.

Always save the tarballs...

chmod +x configure
