configure linux to internet access in a LAN
Hi,
I am using slackware 8.1.0. I wish to configure my linux box to access the internet via a windows-based LAN using a proxy server. How do I carry this out?. This is my NIC configuration network address 192.168.3. subnet mask 255.255.255.128 default gateway 192.168.3.254 but then the proxy server address is 192.168.1.5 Now I configured the linux box to 192.168.3.50 subnet mask 255.255.255.128 default gateway 192.168.3.254 I am able to reach to the other windows 2000 machines on the LAN.I want to access the internet via this LAN which is using a proxy server of address 192.168.1.5 I even configured samba.Still i cannot browse the internet on the linux machine while I am able to ping the other machines which are the LAN and have interenet access using the same proxy server address 192.168.1.5 thanks in advance |
If you can ping your other machines, can you ping outside your network? If so and you get replies, have you setup your DNS entries in /etc/resolv.conf ? And if your using a proxy server to connect to websites, have you configured your proxy setting in whatever browser your using, like Mozilla?

Thanks for the reply.Yes I can ping all the machines in the LAN but when I ping the gateway 192.168.3.254 I get "network unreachable" as message.
Meanwile I have configured both netscape navigator and galion browsers to use a proxy server 192.168.1.5 and still I am not able to browse (I guess because I am not able to reach my network gateway). Also during the boot process I can read this line. SIOCADDRT network unreachable. (I wonder what it means) I really am at my wits' ends. Help. |
Also my LAN is not using a domain but just a workgroup.

Also my LAN is not using a domain but just a workgroup.so I did not assign a DNS for my NIC

i had a problem like this when i was setting up my LAN, but all i had to do was setup the default gateway correctly on the linux box. it looks like you did that already, but maybe the proxy is "whacking things out," in regard to your default gw.
that's just my .02, and it might be wrong gl, y-p |
yep, the proxy's ip has to go in the browser's settings.

Well, i would just suggest you to go to
http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/network.htm and download a software named "proxy" if your gateway was running a window based operating system. |
I have already set up the proxy settings used by the other windows machines on the LAN.Can someone explain to me why I can't ping my default gateway? Also what is the meaning of the line which comes up during the booting process
SIOCADDRT network unreachable Note: I am able to ping my machine and all the others on the LAN. Thanks in advance |
i would suggest you to double check your pc's addresses.
Also, you could try to set all your pc's lan address to 192.168.3.*** and i am sure it'll work. Because i had just did mine in that way. good luck |
