Try going to a console and post the output of ifconfig.

Sorry I was going to tell you that, but it didn't matter if the card wasn't detected. That's good that it is working.
Do you know how to edit xorg.conf?
Identifier "Mouse1"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
/etc/X11/xorg.conf

Are you running KDE? Can you get to /etc/X11 through Konqueror?

If you can get to /etc/X11 through Konqueror, just right-click it and open it with Kate or KWrite or maybe you have another text editor you use.
Scroll down near the bottom until you see those lines that I posted. Your's will probably be slightly different. Try to keep everything else the same, except for what you want to change. If one of the lines I posted is not there, you might have to insert a line and add it.
When you are done, save it. A backup will be made. The changes won't take affect until you reboot. If you mess up xorg.conf, you can always replace it with the backup.

Actually just try adding:
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
I think that is the part for the scroll button.

No need to reboot . Just do 'Ctrl-Alt-Backspace' to restart X.
