Configuiring

I am a slackware newbie and I was wondering how I go about changing the resolution for KDE. I do the startx and get a really big version of KDE and would like to change the resolution to 1024x768.
I tried the xf86config but I do not know what type of video card or anything that I have (it is on an old machine of mine). I just ending up messing it all up. I tried to find SuperProbe like the doc. said but I could not find the dang thing. Thanks.

incendiary,

you can try editing the XF86Config file under /etc/X11 directory. Search for the "Screen section" and there you can change the modes and everything else.
And about that video card .. I suggest you open the machine and see what it hides. Then go on the internet and find info about it.

Enjoy

Sorry to be such a newbie but I opened the xf86config file and I could not fig. out how in the world I change the resolution. I looked through all the text (of course dumbfounded). Could be a little bit more specific on how to change the resolution ... thanks.

xf86cfg is kinda weird looking... Right-click the monitor (you should see stuff like a monitor, mouse, etc.) and click configure on the menu that appears.

incendiary,

no, you have to edit the XF86Config (Linux is, as Unix, case sensitive, so xf86config, Xf86config, xf86Config are all different files).

The one you want to edit is:
editor /etc/X11/Xf86Config

change editor for your favourite editor (like: vim /etc/X11/XF86Config) But you have to be root to change these files!!!
And try to find the section I mentioned before.

And BTW, aaa, have you read the warning that comes with xvidtune???

Enjoy
