Computer Identified over the Internet?
 

The is probably a very dumb question, but can a web site ID a visitor even if that visitor has delete all history and cookies before signing on?
Reason I ask?
I went to a web site with a web cam and signed on to use the chat box.

Every time I've gone back since, after deleting the history and cookies in both Firefox and Opera, it signs me into the chatbox, "'nameused' has entered the room."
I've even gone so far as to install "Tor" and set up Opera, as directed, to go through a proxy and the site can still ID me before the screen is even fully loaded.
Anyone know what is going on?

The site may have logged you by your IP address. Are you behind some type of firewall? I have my Slackware 12 box sitting behind an inexpensive D-Link D1-604 4 port wired router.

It is a randomly assigned IP address. Different every time I sign on.

Unless RPPPPoEK sets up some kind of firewall, no.

OT: What plugin works with that cam page? My Opera loads up mplayer plugin but gets the message not supported.

Perhaps they left something in your Computer then?
If you don't have any cookies left and a different IP they can only get your ID from your Computer. Do you use Java and whatsitcalled that MS secure certificates (and that other sh** that allows you to write in any code) or whatever.. It got to be something identifying you, so try an older browser without all the 'lull lull' that tinkles so nicely and see if they will recognize you then. One that only suports javascript (put that of though :) f ex. If they still can identify you hmm? I would make a clean install :)

That they did, or I should say, Macromedia did.
I can't even remember what gave me the clue, but I went to the my user name home directory and looked into the .macromdia folder. In one of the subdirectories I found a long list of directories/folders for web sites I've visited what used macrommedia's Flashplayer. I opened the file for the site in question and there was my user name. Deleted that directory/folder and the problem disappeared.

When you click on the link to see the "free" adult webcams on that site you are taken to a page that has a url that ends in a rather ominous "https://.........exe" in the address bar of your browser. One can only imagine what this would do to an unpatched windows machine using IE. Bad site! Stay away!

I would still put on a good firewall that warns me whenever my computer wants to send something. Somebody here can tell you how to set that up i'm sure :). Why, well if you uses flash :) you probably like a lot of other 'nifty' programs (ready made for shipping all your info out on the net, like Vista f ex). Its the new trend on the Net and it seems to be 'catching' :) i find it very terribly lacking in security :).For myself i've just installed Slackware 12 and thrown away my Vista :) I will stay with XP for now and test this new Slackware and probably Fedora 7 as i really liked the clean look of it (perfect for a laptop)and the way it handled XEN. But for control i haven't seen anything better than Slackware :)and if i could get a xen that worked in Slackware that would be my 'all time' install ::))

And one more thing my man. No moral attached, ok.
Those 'thingies' you see on that webcam? They might not even exist, at least not as the 'thingie' you believe yourself to be watching :) Its a real 'industry' with guys downloading movies and then putting them up as 'live' webcams ::))

You take a look outside your window, then you gonna see some real people instead. Yeah i know, they talk back, but ain't that the point of it ::)) They're real..

I never click on "free adult sites." The site in question is a real restaurant/bar in Pattaya City, Thailand. Been there myself, seen it with my own eyes. :)
