Question Compton Compositions

Hi everyone,

After last current updates (Sat Nov 19 03:33:33 UTC 2016), I'm having some problems with compton. For example: When I start XFCE and open some program (aleatory), the screen freezes. So, I need to open another session and kill compton process. After this, I back to old session and work normally (without compton running).

I cannot use compton anymore.

Any idea ??

Thank you,
Rafael

Have you tried rebuilding compton? There were quite a few X-related upgrades, including an upgrade to mesa. Compton might need to be rebuilt to use any updated dependencies.

This can happen frequently while running -current.

Unhappy

Thanks bassmadrigal for your help ...

I did as you told me, I rebuilt libconfig (dependency) and compton.
Unfortunately the freezes still happens.

It impossible use compton now, my desktop freezes all the time

(I did these tests on two different laptops, with different settings) -> The same error on both !!

I would then recommend looking at the first post of this sticky and mention it in that thread.

SBo does not officially support -current, but people in that thread are usually able to help people work through issues with running SlackBuilds in -current. Then one of the SBo admins, ponce, takes those fixes into an unofficial SBo repo for -current users.

I think I have the same issue like Rafa. My graphic card is a integrated ATI HD3000, I'm using radeon driver. My screen freeze with compton --backend glx (xfce and fluxbox) and in kde with opengl backend. I rebuild mesa 12.0.2 but it's didn't help so maybe it could be xorg-server 1.19 (regression?). No interesting info in logs files (Xorg.log, xsession-errors, messages, syslog). For a temporary solution in Compton you can use xrender backend.

Yes Polyph, I changed to xrender e now it works. Thanks

But I don't know for you but for me, when I using xrender the quality isn't good than opengl.

I did others tests on my part, looks like it's a dri2 related problem. I forced xorg to load dri3 and now i don't have screen freezing anymore. I just added a "20-radeon.conf" file

/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-radeon.conf

Code:
Section "Device"
        Identifier "HD3000"
        Driver "radeon"
        option "DRI" "3"
Endsection
I hope it's help...

The same settings probably won't help you as these sorts of things tend to be very dependent on the specific graphics card/chip you have.

Here are some of the options you can play with for a intel based system:
Code:
# /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf ###################################

# Section "Device"
# Identifier "KMS Modesetting"
# Driver "modesetting"
# EndSection

Section "Device"
   Identifier "Intel Graphics"
   Driver "intel"
   # Option "DRI" "3"
   # Option "AccelMethod" "SNA"
   # Option "VSync" "off"
   # Option "SwapbuffersWait" "off"
   # Option "PageFlip" "off"
   # Option "TripleBuffer" "off"
   # Option "TearFree" "on"
EndSection

########################################################################
You can try commenting out the 'intel' section and using the 'modesetting' driver instead of the 'intel' one, or do a little trial and error by playing with some of the 'intel' options, but if your system is anything like mine, then you'll just end up swapping one set of issues for another and it's a case of picking the lesser of evils. So far I've found non of the combinations work perfectly on my Broadwell-U Iris 6100 laptop.
