Complaint: no fsck.jfs when booting slackware64 13.0 as live DVD, why ?
 
Well, I noticed this by accident while trying to use dash for the rc.d scripts. I messed up and forgot to link it to /bin, and as such, the system failed to boot properly and would not respond. I rebooted (forcefully), but this messed up the filesystem. I booted the sw64 install DVD and tried to mount it, and it would not mount, I tried to run fsck on it, but it said that fsck.jfs in NOT available. Eventually I booted my old slamd64 12.1 DVD and it had fsck.jfs.

Any reason why this rather useful program was removed ? Or is it a bug, or is my DVD messed up ?

I guess I should just keep around another live CD, I do keep knoppix, but it boots so slow and I don't understand it at all, it's so hard to do anything with it.

Well I've just looked at my Slackware 13 (not Slackware64) install DVD and my disk has /sbin/jfs_fsck so maybe Slackware64 is the same ?

Edit: Looking at my Slackware64 system there is the link fsck.jfs pointing to jfs_fsck but no link on my install media.

Oh, so the name changed, I see. Well, a symlink would be nice, cuz I wouldn't think of running jfs_fsck. I would try fsck_jfs or fsck.jfs.

There is this strange thing tho, right now on my system there are:

so, fsck.jfs is there right now, but not when I boot the install DVD. jfs_fsck is still there.

This issue caused me some grief, too, detailed in this LQ post.

It's not just the Slackware installation media that has this problem; Knoppix is the same (IDK if it has the jfs_* binaries though).

I wonder why the jfs utilities were called jfs_* rather than keeping to the convention of *.jfs.

+1 for having the symlinks on the installation media.

Yeah, knoppix has the same problem, I also tried it while trying to recover from the problem.
