Not really ... not large enough to warrant something
like gentoo that takes you a whole week to install ;)

You may find enhancements in things like mplayer,
or transcode, but it's not going to be that impressive.

Compiling transcode with i386 settings and gcc 2.95.3
in Slack 9.1 and p4 optimisations using gcc 3.3.4 on
Slack 10 ... I'd say I may gain 30 seconds in a 5 hour
encoding session ;)

Cheers,
Tink

In total agreement, but I'd compile mplayer, since the package is simply not optimized for any machine in particular. I think I've seen some marginal improvements with my compile over the package, but purely anecdotal proof only.

It's just not worth the hassle unless you want to compile something in a special way :)

IMO there is a big difference. Granted the person compiling knows what their doing.

In a Gentoo sense it's prebuilt or compile all! I really dont see the sense using Gentoo if you install from a stage 3. Stage 2 is questionable but stage 1 is highly beneficial if you bootstrap the system right.
