Compiling kernel for first time...
 

Yes. I'm using Slackware 12.1 and have never compiled my own kernel. Reason being, I used to Ubuntu, and since they put out a new system every 3 months, I did not see the need. :D

Do I download a vanilla kernel, or go for the one on Slackware's site? These are the things I need it work with:

SCSI Drives
My Super Motherboard
RDRAM
Matrox G550 Graphics card
DVD-RW Drive
Dual Xeon processors (not dual-core, two CPUs)

Then all the usual intel audio chips, usb controllers, etc.

I also have a crapload of Pinnacle Systems hardware I don't use right now, but it would be nice. I'm not sure how much work this will take, or if its even "worth it", but it would be something good for me to get into.

Hiya :) yup, go to one of the kernel mirrors, such as what I use in Canada: ftp://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6/ and download a whole kernel archive. Get the signature file too and check it against the archive with 'gpg --verify' after downloading.

Unpack and begin! Lots of help is around.

Alien Bob's guide is a good one. If you use that you'll be fine.

Whether it's worth it, in most cases you will get a performance boost, and you'll learn something too.
