Hi all,
i have an old sony vaio notebook with a p150 mmx cpu and a small - 2 GB - hdd with zipslack from the slackware 10 cd.
when i started to compile a new kernel, i got a strange error message. At first i downloaded the 2.4.27, later i patched to 2.4.28-pre1, but the message still remains.
My gcc version is 3.4.0.
There is no .config from older kernel. make[2]: *** No rule to make target `/usr/src/linux-2.4.28-pre1/include/linux/modversions.h', needed by `sched.o'. Stop.
I don't know how to fix it. Any idea?
Remove the 2.4.28-pre1 you have, then install the kernel-headers and kernel-source packages. That'll give you the correct 2.4.26 kernel, which should work. (You can patch it up later)
This is the one thing that you can't do under ZipSlack -compile kernels. It has to do with the link in /usr/src.
You'll have to 'migrate' your installation to linux partition. See faq.txt for details.
gnashley: on this machine i have not enough space to create a new partition. if i haven't enough free space on the windows partition, i can zip the Linux directory. this UMSDOS trick is the best for me.
WMD: i replaced the kernel source as you suggested, but i got the error again.
Thank you for helping. Today morning i had a little time for playing with the kernel. I tested the compiling with different kernel versions. Later i replaced/downgraded the 3.4 GCC to 3.3. TADAA! At last, with the older GCC i created a 100% working kernel from 2.4.26 and 2.4.27 with ZipSlack. Conclusion: It is possible to compile a 2.4.x kernel with GCC 3.3.4
And now i'm very happy with my little Linux
