Compiling 3.14 kernel for 14.1 Stable

Hello all! I was running -current for awhile but I borked my system. Went back to stable. I did notice my computer ran better with the -current kernel. What is necessary to compile this kernel for stable? I do not want to wait for new release as my touchpad and DVD drive will work with new kernel. Any quick and dirty methods to do this? Thanks!

I followed this when I did mine..http://alien.slackbook.org/dokuwiki/...kernelbuilding

You can also use this for your config :http://mirrors.slackware.com/slackwa...esting-3.18.1/

Just grab the updated kernel packages and run installpkg on them (make sure you installpkg them instead of upgradepkg so it doesn't overwrite your stock kernel). Then just re-setup your lilo to point to the new kernel (I'd recommend keeping an entry for your old kernel as well).

If you want to actually compile one, just grab the source and the .config and then follow any number of guides online covering how to compile a kernel for Slackware (not that it's really different from other distros).

EDIT: You can grab the kernel from the a/ series in current. Make sure you grab the kernel, the firmware, and the modules.

If he is desiring to run 3.14, it would be a bad idea to use a config for 3.18. However, @OP, as linuxtinker provided, Pat does provide the config for the 3.18.1 kernel if you were wanting to compile a newer one.

My bad I have 3.18 stuck in my mind as the "-current" because it just went LTS and that was the last one I compiled...

My guess is that 3.18 will be the default once all these impending updates drop.

@OP, I've been running the 3.18 kernel on my 14.1 installation for several months and I have no complaints. All my hardware is supported and things are running smoothly. If you're going to compile a kernel (rather than installing the pre-built kernel from -current), I'd definitely go for the 3.18 series.

Thanks for all of the replies. I will have some thinking to do on which kernel to move to, 3.14 or 3.18.

I will be marking this as solved since I asked how to compile a kernel and have received the answer. Thanks!
