compiled 2.6.8.1, and just read that 2.6.9 patched 2.6.8, NOT 2.6.8.1, what gives?

Hello everybody. I just made it through my first successful kernel compile, and I went to #kernel on irc.freenode.net to see if I could get some help with framebuffer--for some reason it's starting color console 80x30 and I have obnoxiously large fonts...As if it's running in 800x600 instead of 1024x768 (like it was with 2.4.26). Anyway...

But here's the real question
The topic in #kernel says
Quote:
| 2.6.9* patches against 2.6.8, NOT 2.6.8.1 | #kernel for all your kernel needs
What's the deal with that. Since I'm assuming I'll eventually want to go to the 2.6.9 kernel, I'm a bit peeved that apparently 2.6.8.1 will not patch. Anyone know why this might be? Should I have compiled 2.6.8 instead of 2.6.8.1??

Oh btw, I still have the crap console during boot, so if anyone has any suggestions for that, plz let me know as well...
Thanks.

well, if u have not changed your sources, then yes patching will work and if you do changes to your your vanilla 2.6.8.1 sources then it will break sometime.

normal user only do make menuconfig, make etc, so it should work fine.

regards

I compiled 2.6.8.1 and then tried to patch 2.6.9 but it did not work. So then I compiled 2.6.9 from source in Slackware 10.0 but there was one problem, man-pages could not be shown. If you have compiled the 2.6.9-kernel in slack please tell me if you can show man-pages without problem.

It appears to be a problem with udev. Check this thread for more info.

Yeah, thanks. I got it to work perfect just by editing one line in udev.rules,

Though, they should fix this in new kernel-versions. :P

You can't apply the 2.6.9 patch to 2.6.8.1 you have to apply it to 2.6.8. Check the comments on kerneltrap.
