i just put the single line

source ~/.bashrc

in ~/.bash_profile, and then all my aliases in ~/.bashrc, and that seems to work fine. you can also just type "source ~/.bashrc" in a terminal after adding an alias to ~/.bashrc to see if it works (if bash is your shell, as Nbomr said ).

I usually put my aliases under a file named .profile in my home directory. Works fine for the most part.
