CollegeLinux

I was wondering if there was a specific forum for CL or if you would use this one since it is based on Slackware 9.1 and is compatible with Slackware. If so I have a question if not I am sorry to bother you all.

After I installed it and tried to log onto my hotmail account with GAIM it told me I needed SSL installed and so I went to the package manager and tried to install gaim again to see if it just missed something and when I clicked the button to install it all it did was sit there twirling and never moved so I was wondering if that was just suppose to take a really long time or if there was another way to uninstall it and reinstall it.

Now my background info. I have installed fedora and LindowsOS laptop edition and obviously now CL but have never gone beyond that so I am a complete noob when it comes to linux and am trying to learn it by forcing my self to. I only have it installed on my laptop now and have no choice but to learn how to use it in order to get things done.

Thanks for all the help ahead of time.

Umm go to Linux Packages and download gaim open the cmd line and type installpkg <EXACTPACKAGENAME.tgz> Without the <> of course. The one off Linux packages should have SSL support installed automaticly. That should work and it would probly be listed under slack because college linux isnt that big yet and dont think it will be.

well I went into kconsole and typed that and it said that the installpkg was not a known cmd.

Yeah I am downloading the real thing at home right now so tonight I will actually get slackware 9.1 installed hopefully but for now I am playing with this just to learn things.

i dont use collegelinux, so i am not so sure about it having the same pkgtools as slackware. but if it does. you must "su" yourself and type installpkg gaim-*.tgz in the console. if this doesn't work, you might want to try the forums that are collegelinux http://collegelinux.org/phorum/

yeah I have posted there but I haven't gotten any responses. But any ways I got the installpkg to work just fine now. I had to make sure I ran it as root not as the user but it still didn't fix the problem so I am not sure what the deal is. I guess I am not going to worry to much about it since after tonight I will have the real thing ( slackware 9.1 ) installed on my laptop if all goes well.

Thanks for all you help guys. Even though I never got the problem fixed I am still smarter then I was with using the installpkg cmd now.
