Those "useless apps" contained something that fixed your problem. Slackware does not provide dependency resolution, so things are generally tested against a full install and that's it. If you want to use a partial install, you may end up with problems like this.

You're able to go through and start removing packages out of the xap to see which one(s) was/were the culprit, or you could keep them for simplicity's sake and give up the little bit of harddrive space they take up (probably around 1GB).

Cinnamon start depends on network-manager-applet package from xap.
