chown gives "Operation not permitted".

Hi:
Code:
bill@darkstar/debian# v almacen/ -d
drwxr-xr-x 5 root root 4.0K Sep 25 00:31 almacen/
bill@darkstar/debian# chown -R bill:bill almacen/
gives "Operation not permitted" for every file in the tree. Possible cause?
I don't give any further details as this is basic linux. Notice I am working as root.

Never heard of a "v" command. Does it really exist?

What file system is the drive formatted in? If it is windows file systems, like ntfs or fat32, you have to set the ownership when mounting... you can set that in fstab so you don't have to do it every time.

ext2. Now I see I can solve the problem by mounting with forced ownership but, anyway, that (what chmod is doing) is not normal behavior.

@Didier: beg your pardon. v is alias for ls -l.

Well, you are sure to run as root ? Because according your code, you are working as bill on directory own by root, so the message seems legit to me.
It seems '#' is misleading.

My mistake. I havve just repeated the procedure and no notification at all (no error). It's quite possible I actually was bill then.
