Choices
I need some help making the following choices:
1) Are there any recommendations to what size partitions I should have on a 40gig drive? 2) As a Linux semi-newbie (i've ran only Red Hat 9.0, Fedora Core 1/2) I would like to know what is better for this distro: Gnome or KDE. If someone would be so kind to help me with those two choice, that would be great. |
There are already many posts asking about partitioning advices. It's really a matter of choice, so search in the forums and select the variant you like the most.
I would recommend KDE. Gnome will be probably aborted by Slackware and KDE is IMHO more tidy and complete (only an opinion though). |
hi
on my 40GB drive for Slackware 9.1, I have 2 GB for /, 6 GB for /usr, 1 GB for swap, 512 MB for /tmp, 512 M for /var and rest for /home. I'd strongly suggest you also have a 1 GB primary with FAT, so you can exchange data should you install someother OS in future like BSD or Solaris. HTH |
I have 8GB for /
512 MB for swap 30 GB for /home I would probably go bigger on / now if I redid it. If you start installing america's army, neverwinter nights, ut2004, they take a lot of space. |
On my 40 GB HDD I have the partition broken down like this:
/dev/hda1 10gb mounted at / /dev/hda5 1gb swap /dev/hda6 29 gb mounted at /home Gnome is being officially dropped from the looks of it by Pat. Only KDE will be available as official and if you look at the updates in 10 and current. I have recently switched from gnome to KDE and love it. Give both a shot. |
