Thanks for your reply,Chinaman.

After you said that a tutorial is recommended,I do want to post a tutorial.How can I do this in Linuxquestion?Because I don't want other Slackware Linux user has this struggle just want to "display nice font appearance".

Learn much through this experience.

It's called Linux Tutorials and/or Linux Answers right here in LQ.
Submit it in the LinuxAnswers - the LQ Linux tutorial section.

Reviving an old thread...

I have installed freetype and got simhei.ttf from the net. I think somehow freetype made my X font look worse than before. And chinese characters are still boxes in all programs.

I'm not really sure what I should do now. How do I get X to use the chinese font? I am using xfce4 btw...

Please pay extra attention on the browser setting.You have to set your browswer->preference->content and set the suitable font to display the character correctly.
