Chestnut Dialer in Xfce.
I'm trying to use as few KDE packages as possible in Xfce and yesterday found and installed Chestnut-dialer (./configure, make, make install).
When trying to run it as a user it gives the message, "pppd:must be root to run pppd." Apparenty you have to set the pppd UID for root. Once done it will make the connection as user, but you can't "go anywhere." That is the e-mail client, browser, etc., report they are not connected. So far the only way to get it to work is to open a terminal, sign on as root (su) and fire up Chestnut-dialer from the command line. Any ideas on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. :hattip: |
I think that's a "bug" with the Chestnut-dialer itself. (I'm not real "techy" on that) but I've had the exact same issue with Chestnut-dialer on Slackware derivitive distros. On Wolvix,..and especially on Vector Linux. On Vector Linux,..I was told (on their forum) to use the command" "/sbin/vsuper chestnut-dialer" for the launcher. Works fine that way. I went into Midnight Commander (as root) and corrected the "usr/share/applications/chestnut-dialer" that way. Then my desktop icon launched correctly. I've never used Slackware itself (intend to try it soon)....but it may have similiar aspects to the Chestnut-dialer problems in Wolvix and Vector.

Thank you for taking the time to reply. It is greatly appreciated.
Vsuper must be a command particular to Vector Linux as it doesn't work in Slackware. Would you be kind enough to expand on your statement, "I went into Midnight Commander (as root) and corrected the "usr/share/applications/chestnut-dialer" that way." What do you mean by "corrected... that way"? Thanks, again. :hattip: |
Hi,
FWIW, I had same problem with wvdial in KDE on Slack 12.2 It may be pppd Forget how I got around it. Might've created a sudo entry, passwordless, so I could script (auto) the dialup without need to enter a password. You might search forum for wvdial, ppp0, pppd, dialup Some were suid (?) the pppd. But I thought sudo may more secure. I didn't want suid it. Perhaps yet a 3rd or 4th way too. -- Alan. |
