My local started doing this hoppy Duvel. A great beer. I'm off to Norway tomorrow to visit my brother, so this is a good way to celebrate. It's a very important place to me, and one which I associate heavily with Slackware since I was in Norway visiting him when he first told me about the distro years ago. It remained in my head ever since... and here I am. Good night, everyone.

There is a soft spot in my old, hard heart for Norway. When I was living in France in the late '60s I met, for whatever reasons I don't know, many girls from Norway. There are the best, besides being drop dead gorgeous.

IIRC, there was always some animosity between Oslo and Bergen.

I'm back now and had a great time, I only regret that I didn't stay a bit longer. My brother had an old Slack box which he hadn't booted for years. I really wanted to get it running to see which older version it was running [he said he last booted it 12 years ago, then 7 or 8, so he really wasn't sure] but the PSU had died so it didn't happen. Still, we had a lot of great chats about Unix and Slackware and some great food. Norway does good beef.

I was surprised to find that in the supermarkets one can't buy alcohol on a Sunday neither buy beer over 4.7%. All the foreign imports have taken their ABV down to 4.7% to fit in. Also, the guy at the bar at the airport told me that drinking any night apart from Saturday is frowned upon. He was from Canada and moved next to some natives, and he asked them out on a Tue night for some beers and to play some pool. One of them said to him, "do you have a problem with drinking?"

Though apparently on Saturday night all the Norwegians go crazy and have ten beers or more. Weird.

Surely that policy will have detrimental effects on the public sewer system Sat. night into Sun. morning. They should spread the flushing out throughout the week.

PS: I am beginning to think we need a Slackware travel/post your pictures thread....

Yes, kind of like "Slackware on tour", I've been thinking about that. My netbook [and related Slack install] has been abroad three times this year, as well as around the UK. Connecting to public wifi in Norway was the easiest it's been anywhere. In the UK you have to register with some company you don't care about before it'll let you access the internet, in Turkey they won't let Linux systems access the internet at all without first being whitelisted on the server, but in Oslo I didn't even need a password for the airport wifi - it was just click, connect, in.

Just to relate this to beer once more, it was horrifically expensive. A bottle of cider in the supermarket cost around £5 [here in London it would be about £1.50], whereas a 0.4 litre [3/4 of a pint] glass of beer in the airport [OK, it was the airport] cost just under £8. The equivalent in a UK pub would be less than half of that.

But the standard of living there is insanely high. Hardly any poverty, everything "just worked", all the places we went to/through were ordered, clean and tidy, no overcrowding. The landscape was breathtaking. It's a great country [and they like heavy metal].

Attached: an IPA in a brasserie we visited.

Very entertaining thread. As for traffic and driving, the US is so big it's almost incomprehensible. When I was a driver in the late 90s and early 00s I often had to drive around Ireland in a (very long) day. Dublin-Waterford-Cork-Limerick-Galway-Sligo-Dublin, and every damn village off the beaten track as well! Try covering the entire US landmass in a day! The laws are much stricter now, regarding driver hours and tachographs, and the roads far, far better.

As for beer, it's a real eye opener to hear how other countries treat it. We can get virtually any beer of any strength here at the local off-licence, but they must close at 2200. I love the European craft beers - German, Czech, British, Polish, Spanish, French. Especially those brewed in countries like Germany where they have strong purity laws. We also have Chinese and Turkish beers, and of course the local brews. Not sure about American beer - even our Budweiser is brewed here in Europe.

I saw this at my local supermarket and had to have it. How could any Slackware user resist? Have a good evening, all.

Since 9.1, and a bunch of things in between.

Going steady as my daily driver for a good few years now.

Cheers to you all my beautiful fellow Slackers!

I think it's about 1.5 hours from SLC, but it's been a while since I've made that drive. Luckily, I'm military, so if I have a need for normal strength, I just need to head to one of the military bases in the area (Camp Williams, ANG base by the SLC airport, Hill AFB, or possibly Dugway or Tooele Army Depot).
Us civilians in Tooele county, Utah drive to Wendover, Nevada to pick up our liquor. Commonly referred to as bendover Wendover since the businesses are casinos, strip clubs and liquor stores. All money sinks, haha :'(

I've seriously got into IPA recently. The Kernel, Brewdog and Enefield are just some of the London Breweries that do excellent IPAs.

It's happening everywhere, it's a beer revolution. I live around the corner from several microbreweries. There's even a brewery down in Sussex called Dark Star.

Soon soon, DIPA will come and catch you, then you have TRIPLE IPA.....
