Changing from a dual core to quad.

I have a dual core and a quad core cpu for the same motherboard. The dual is running in the slackbox now but I was wondering if I put the quad in will it use all 4 cores or do I need to recompile the kernel?

I am planning on trying LFS and will be doing lots of compiling, hoping the quad will go faster.

Thanks.

You would not need to recompile anything to use the 4 cores unless you have chosen a very specific CPU when building your kernel (if you use the default Slack kernels you won't have to touch a thing). I haven't compiled a custom kernel for a while now but I'm not even sure that you can compile for a processor specific enough that it is optimized for 2-core CPUs over 4-core [of the same general model/brand] or otherwise...so you're probably OK.

I'm pretty sure setting the max number of CPU'S would be the closest you could come and I'm pretty sure a default slack kernel is set to either 8 or 32 (I know big difference, but it's one of the 2). Further if they share the same socket then they are of the same family like core2 duo or quad. Either way the machine will pick it up on boot.
