You can run xwmconfig

Sorry. I didn't read your question fully. I thought you were running X through startx. Please ignore my answer.

If you installed kde correctly then runlevel 4 should find kdm and start it. kdm has a higher priority than xdm.

So as root init 3 and then init 4 should start kdm.

It's a bit stupid to ask this in two separate threads. Waste of people's time.

This is not very clear...

Did you install the KDE packages?

KDM is part of KDE (basically the kdebase-workspace package, but there are some additional files in kdebase, kdebase-runtime and kdeartwork).
It might even need other kde packages.
I wouldn't install it separately unless you like trouble-shooting.

Like XGizzmo said, it has priority over xdm, so if it doesn't start, it probably means it is not installed.
The priority is:
1) gdm
2) kdm
3) xdm

/etc/rc.d/rc.4 checks for an executable file named "kdm" in /opt/kde/bin or /usr/bin

1) as mentioned kdm has priority over xdm so check your installation.
2) xwmconfig should work fine on selecting which manager to load by default.

3) double posting always bad...
