The problem with Celerons and Durons is the dodgy motherboards sold with them, some ALI and SIS chipsets do give problems. The CPUs themselves work just fine.
I've said it before, and ill probably have to say it 1000 more times. If you build an Intel processor based system, use a real Intel Motherboard (not just chipset based). As far as AMD based motherboards go, *shrug* spin the wheel, and roll the ball.

nice to know they are no longer broken
in the begining, they didnt have a L2 cash because it was cheeper to make them w/o one (it still is as evident from the L2-cash-less intel shelton)

but nowadays they just make a small L2 cash on the celerons

Errr.. Intel motherboards are great, if you like not being able to change any bios settings and be totally restricted, and if you enjoy paying a huge markup because it says 'Intel'. In general boards based on intel chipsets by brands like Asus, MSI, et al. are cheaper and have many more features, like built in raid or fsb/volt controlling.

I have a Gigabyte. Works wonderfully, and was only $90.

I have a Celeron D 2.66@3.2(not the best overclock due to Asus' crappy voltage regulation :\)
It compiles X 6.8 in a bit over 20 minutes. It's a wonderful chip for linux imo and you can use the 865 chipset which absolutely does not have the problems with Linux that nforce boards do. I can't recommend Asus boards though, between poor voltage regulation and the P4p800 series' SATA issues with certain kernels, you'd probably do better with abit or DFI.

Actually Nforce boards have a suprising amount of support for linux.
for those that opt for an Nforce board w/ the premium audio, nvidia has drivers that fully support the hardware mixing and 5.1 features. Also, the GPL'd ethernet drivers known as forcdeth are now endorced by nvidia which means that any new distro can be packaged with the correct LAN drivers.

have you consitered buying an AMD based system rather than celeron? cause the athlon XP prices are on par with celeron while the performance is far greater, even though they are not quite up to par with pentium 4's performance they are a nice ecinomical middle ground.
