cdrom symbol in 2.6.7
 

I just installed the 2.6.7 kernel over the 2.4.26 kernel that came with slackware 10.0. I probably am just missing something very silly, but I can't seem to mount any of my optical drives. It is recognised as the OS loads as hdc and hdd, however, neither are in the /dev directory (which is significantly different from what I remembered it to be - I hope it's normal). Anyways, anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?

Check your /etc/rc.d/ directory, see whether rc.udev and rc.hotplug are executable.

Anyway, mind showing us the output of ls -l /dev/hd*? It'll be beneficial for us to troubleshoot your problems.

ls /dev/hd* returns hda, hda1-8, hdb, hdb1-9.

In the 2.6.7 kernel, are the links /dev/cdrom and /dev/cdrom1 still created during kernel boot-up? I'm thinking that this is the main problem.

What about the rc.udev and rc.hotplug files, are they executable?

rc.udev creates the dynamic /dev file... but it needs rc.hotplug to detect the devices first.
