Chinaman - forgive me.
I was reading the same post and coming away with a different view of the problem.
I understand your point as it relates to mounting/recognizing the cdrom.
I will point out though that I have encountered times (at least 4) where I had set lilo up as described but forgot to set fstab to read /dev/sr0 or /dev/cdrom with a symlink to /dev/sr0. The error was very specific regarding not a block device and "hinted" at fixing fstab due to scsi emulation.
Perhaps my panties need unbunching

Found an offending append=ide-scsi line in my lilo.conf, commented, rebooted. Everything is mountable/readable. Now for getting writing started, but have to sleep. Will post more later.

After commenting out the "append" line, it WORKS. Mounts/reads/writes on both drives.
I feel like such a dweeb. I must have added that line sometime ago, just never used the cd drives after that.
If it was not for you, Chinaman, I never would have noticed the "ide-scsi" in the message log.

I got same problem but in the 2.6.15.6 kernel in the 2.4.31 kernel it works fine, in the 2.6.15.6 k3b won't even recognize hdd.

I will point out though that I have encountered times (at least 4) where I had set lilo up as described but forgot to set fstab to read /dev/sr0 or /dev/cdrom with a symlink to /dev/sr0. The error was very specific regarding not a block device and "hinted" at fixing fstab due to scsi emulation.

As I've stated before: Everything works now.
All I did was get rid of the append= line in my lilo.conf.
Now both cdrw drives mount/read/write.
