cd ripping in Slack 10.2
I like using grip and it worked fine in Slack 10.1 with a package from linuxpackages.net. Grip won't compile from source for Slack 10.2 and I cannot find any binary packages. Are there binaries around for grip in Slack 10.2 or is there another way of ripping cds as mp3s in Slack 10.2?

ripperX works good in GUI. I'm actually using an old pc and prefer CLI-I will look into cdparanoia.
Thanks!

You may want to take a look at abcde. It's a command line front end for cdparanoia and lame AND it will do cddb lookups.

If you're using KDE, the "Audio CD" browser function of Konqueror works well. You can drag & drop songs as mp3, ogg, flac or wav to whatever directory you have write permissions in.
And it'll do the CDDB lookup and put id3 tags into your ripped tracks!

I don't run KDE or gnome so there is a lot of stuff I can't use. But I had good luck with xcdroast. It's great if you run X.

I like abcde on my Slack box-any idea how it knows which CDDB to use on the internet? I assume it's freedb...how would I change this?

abcde uses a program called cd-discid (written by the same guy who wrote abcde) to perfomr CDDB lookups. The README file included in the cd-discid package describes how the lookup is performed. I suggest you start there.

Neither the man page or the readme for cd-discid give the configuration file that's used. where is the .conf file? Is there one?

There isn't a conf file. If you want to change the lookup site, I think you're going to have to modify the program code.
