cd input/output error
HI!
I think my only slack 8.1 cd (copy) is badly [;--/////////////>
i tried 4 times but i couldn't pass trough the "installing package A" part , after a while i get :
cat:read:input/output error
- Is it possible to get anything from this cd ?
- Do i still have a chance to install everything (from the hard-disk maybe)?
- At least can i still get some packages installed on my "old mdrake 8.2" ? BTW great distro, ... when it's the only one you have :-) the reason i'm saying this is because i noticed that just when it's about to change to (package A menu) next step, my cdrom gave some unusual "kicks" before the error, so in theory the whole thing atferwards could be "intact", right ?

Not sure what difference the rest will make, with out the "a" package set you are not going to have much of a Linux system. Have you used this CD before and completed an install? The Slack 8.1 iso image requires a 700 MByte CD. If it is burned to a 650 MByte CD, it won't fit. And you will get the problems that you described.

Did you ever resolve this issue?
I have the exact same error at the exact same time.
I have it on a 700MB CD, and I have also tried a new CDROM drive.

There was another thread recently where the CD drive was not mounting correctly. The solution there was to pass ide=nodma as a boot kernel paramater when booting the CD. It may be that some newer chipsets are not fully supported as yet and the kernels attempts to use a driver that is broken for DMA operations that fails on some chipsets.
Maybe it will help. A bad IDE DMA driver could easily make a CD appear to be corrupted.

I'm having the same problem. I have installed sucessfully from this cd before, but anytime I try to access anything in /cdrom/slackware/a it gives me an error. No other files on the CD do this, and I can access the files just fine from a windows computer. I tried passing "ide=nodma" at boot, but that didn't help anything. Any ideas?

I'm having the same problem in the install. I'm using the bare.i boot disk and install.1 and install.2. I get the cat: read: Input/output error.
I'm using a laptop.
Should I try another bootdisk perhaps?
I'm pretty new to linux.

Search here on LQ in just the Slackware forum on the command "md5sum". I think you be able to locate directions on how to verify the slackware tree of the installation CD. If you are unable to verify it on the notebook then try a different computer. If it still fails then it is probably a bad CD or bad download. If you are able to verify the contents on another machine but not on the notebook, then probably a drive problem.

need help with slackware error
i am a problem with the installation of "package series ==>ap<==" it says cat:read:Input/Output error. it comes up a little after the the package series ==>ap<==". the error message comes up at the bottom of the screen. i am trying to download slackware 9. i tried using the ide=nodma at the boot promt, but it said can not find kernel image. it said that also when i typed in usb.i. i have tried adaptec.s, bare.i, scsi.s, and scsi2.s when booting the cd. but later on in the installation i got the same cat:read:input/output error.
thanks
please email me at zihan1@hotmail.com if you can help.
