Capturing USB streaming from a Sony Digital Video Camera.
 

Now that my life changed to Slackware style and I love that :-) I am trying to find out how to manage certain things I can't find out how to do.

I have a Sony Digital 8 Handycam with USB streaming. In win I was able to capture video through this USB connection.

Is there a program or way to capture video from this device in Slackware?

My wife recorded one of my daughters dancing yesterday and she is expecting me to show this video on my computer. Will I be able to? :-)

Thanks Brian for your suggestion. I've read that post but it doesn't solve the problem with an usb connection. It recommends firewire. What I need is to be able to capture from USB.

Sorry, but that's not possible, AFAIK. You must use firewire or it will not work.

So, I will need a win box to capture from the camera :-(

This is something slackware may include in future versions.

The camera has also a connector that says dv. Is that for firewire?
How can I check my slackware 12.1 has firewire enabled?

If you plugin your camera in a USB slot and run "lsusb" can you tell us the USB ID of your camera? Some cameras are supported by the linux-uvc driver (not part of Slackware but I have a package).
With the USBID for your camera it is easier searching. Also, you can just be adventurous and install my linux-uvc package and then plug in the camera.

That "DV" port is likely to be the FireWire port. If your computer has a firewire interface then it would be easy to get your camera stream onto the computer using programs like VLC (package for VLC here: http://www.slackware.com/~alien/slackbuilds/vlc/)

You can also try gphoto, it supports many digital cameras in that you can download photos and movies from the camera, but not stream it.

I finally bought a firewire connector.
 

I've finally bought a firewire connector for my camera. It works!
Now, I will start a new thread asking for tips on capturing (best soft to use, etc).

What I realized is that most cameras use firewire to connect to computers so it is better to put efforts on that side instead of using usb.
