Capture IP address

What's the best way capture just the IP address for eth0 with bash so I can
use it in a netfilter script?

I don't know if it's the best way, but the following will clean up the output of ifconfig:

/sbin/ifconfig eth0 | /bin/grep "inet addr:" | /bin/awk -F: {'print $2'} | /bin/cut -d\  -f 1
