capture and video4linux

It's like this I'm going to capture some film from tv and vhs to the computer, what do I need to do to get this working?
I have downloaded tvtime which seems to be a superb app if I get all equipment to work correctly. I have a separate tv-in/tv-out card. Is there anything more I need to download?
What do I need to configure in the kernel (2.4.2.2), and how do I do that?

Thanks in advance

All I think you need to do is load the appropriate kernel module for your tv tunercard, i believe you just need to load the bttv module (modprobe bttv), but that is if your card is using that chipset.
