can't starx: error setting MTRR

Hi All,

I just did a minimal install of slack 13. X starts and I can see xterm (I think it's xterm) and the cursor flickers for about 2 seconds but then exits back to a virtual terminal and the only error message is:waiting for X server to shut down error setting MTRR (base = 0xe0000000, size = 0x0ff00000, type = 1) Invalid argument
(22)

does anyone know what this means? I googled and found some things related to hal, but hal is installed.

Any clues?
Thanks

Hi, I have the same problem.
What I just found out is that screen flickering can be solved by reverting back to the old mesa (I think it's mesa). What you have probably done is that you installed Slackware directly with the patches.

I'll post an update when I solve my problem.

I also thought it's hal related, and it still could be. But I did install everything, I only replaced packages with slackware patches and did some other minor changes (like pam).

EDIT: It's not mesa. I just tried without the new mesa package, still the same result, I just got rid from the screen flickering, which you obviously don't have, but my cursor also flickers one way or another.

Could you please post a list of your packages? Like this:
cd /var/log/packages; ls -t > list
And then upload list somewhere.

If you make progress, please notify me - I will be very thankful.

Hi,

I did a minimal install with disc one and then installed the X stuff with slackpkg and slapt-get. I can post my packages when I get some more time to work on it. Right now I'm on vector linux and I go back and forth with clonezilla.

Thanks

try adding
Quote:

Option "mtrr" "false"
on 'xorg.conf'

The same for me... the problem is not mtrr because when I use xorg.conf file it gives me backtrace. See my threat: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...e-13.0-764400/

Sorry for the double post, but I found a solution. Use a display manager or install KDE. Don't know why, but startx doesn't work. Just use a display manager.
