what happen when as root you do : mount -t iso9660 /dev/scd0 /mnt/cdrom ?
what the output of :
cat /proc/scsi/scsi
ls /proc/ide

ls /proc/ide:
drivers hda@ hdc@ hdd@ ide0/ ide1/ piix


when i do mount -t iso9660 /dev/scd0 /mnt/cdrom as root it happens the same..

I find that the dvd/cdrw is /dev/sr0 on my 2.4.26 Slack 10 box
