but the thing is that LILO was not installed on my machine(there was an error which i don't remember.) and i don't have that liloconfig or lilo.conf file in the/etc/ directory
If you built Slackware with EXT4,GRUB will not recognize it. You could use "ntldr" in XP instead but first you have to get lilo to work. "startx" will start the window manager but first do "adduser" and build a user account. Running "X" in root is still a bad idea. IMHO
But can I log directly into slackware like we do in fedora. We get a login screen and just enter the username and password

Use a text editor to open the /etc/inittab
where you see this id:3:initdefault:
change to id:4:initdefault:
Save and exit the file
you will boot to Multiuser startup
