Cannot select ALSA sound in kde

Hi all, I'm new to linuxquestions, but not Linux.
My question is this though, since Slack 9.1 uses alsa, should I be able to select ALSA from the device io method drop list in KDE? It seems like a permission problem as I can select it as root and sound works fine, but not as a "user".
I get the following error "device: default can't be opened for playback (Permission Denied)"
Sound works as a "user" if I select oss, but I thought it would be better to use alsa.....any ideas?
Thanks in advance!

try checking the permissions on the alsa devices in /dev/

You'll have to check the ALSA docs for which these are since I'm on my mac so don't have this.
