Cannot play Ogg Vorbis files in KDE
 

I am running KDE 3.5.4 with Slackware-current. I can play all sound files in KDE programs (amarok, juk, embedded players, etc.) except Ogg Vorbis files. In fact, when I try to add an .ogg file to an amarok playlist, it tells me it's not a playable file and refuses to even load it. Oggs in any non-KDE program work just fine. I haven't removed or changed any packages except keeping up with -current. Any ideas how to fix this?

I'm also using current but oggs work fine in amarok and xmms. Does this also happen with under XFCE or FluxBox?

PS: as this only happens with KDE programs, try reinstalling arts and then kdemultimedia, kdelibs and perhaps libtunepimp.

I don't use arts, just ALSA (with the xine engine in amarok). Would reinstalling arts help at all?

In KDE Control Center look under KDE Components and File Associations. Expand the audio section and look for vorbis, x-oggflac, and x-vorbis. If they exist make sure they're associated with your audio programs. If not you may have to Add... them.

They are there. The thing is, though, is not that the program associations are wrong. It's that KDE programs flat-out refuse to play or even load Ogg Vorbis files for some reason. Like I'm trying to load a picture file or some other non-audio type. Even if I open the program and load the files manually, or drag and drop them into the program, or something, they cannot be played. Any other non-KDE program works just fine.

I'm having the same problem, but I don't think KDE is the problem. I think Xine is the problem. Attempting to load Ogg Vorbis files in Xine or GXine results in a similar error to the one in amarok (which is using the xine engine on my system).

Under the plugin tab, there's also a couple handfuls of errors about not finding "xineplug_dmx_ogg.so" and some references to libtheora.so.0

The latest included version of xine-lib (1.1.2-i686-2) was supposed to have support for the ogg theora video format, but I think that Pat might've accidentally neglected to enable ogg vorbis support when compiling.

In the meantime until this is sorted out, you could always run those files from the CLI with ogg123. There's your silver lining for the night. ;)

If that's the case, I will try to recompile xine and see if that fixes it.

Success! I compiled xine-lib myself and it works now. Thanks for the tip, KuriosD -- why don't you give it a try and see what happens.

Wynd, did you compile xine-lib with different options than in official Slackbuild? I think I have the same problem with ogg files, but recompiling xine-lib didn't help :(

Do you have the libtheora package installed? On my system it's libtheora-1.0alpha7-i486-1

Yes, I have libtheora installed, the same version as you. When I use i.e. 'aplay some_file.ogg' it sounds like the file is corrupted. But mplayer plays it clearly. I also recompiled libtheora, but it didn't change anything. Sound system in KDE is disabled (Settings->Sound & Multimedia->Sound System). I tried to play these ogg files in runlevel 3, but situation was the same as in KDE.
