I have Slackware 11.0 w/ kernel 2.4.33.3 and the associated svgalib-1.4.3-i386-2 but pkgtool says:
FATAL: kernel too old. What am I doing wrong?
The thing I see you doing wrong is continuing on with the 2.4.x kernel. I am running the latest and greatest kernel version 2.6.22.1. I would recommend looking into upgrading to at least kernel version 2.6.18 as it is on the Slack 11 install disk set. There are lots of kernel compilation how to's on the net. Give it a go! If you'd like to upgrade to the latest kernel version, you can get the source code at this link.
After all, if it's telling you your kernel is too old, it's probably too old.
slackpkg is a automated tool for managing Slackware Linux packages. It is on instalation CD (DVD) in /extra.
man slackpkg
Did you reinstall in another way glibc-2.3.6-i486-6.tgz?
Okay, you are sending me in the wrong direction. I can't make svgalib work and you are telling me to install slackpkg. Okay, slackpkg is "extra" isn't it? So I try it and it gives me more crap. It (1) comes in 2 versions, one complains that its conf is wrong and the other says FATAL: kernal too old, and (2) this is irrelevant to svgalib. If you mean to say reinstall glibc, I can do that with the basic pkgtool, can't I? Thanks, but if you cannot solve the prob directly, maybe you can't help.

What the hell does this have to do with svgalib? I don't care about your random opinions, do I? No, keep them to yourself.

He is trying to tell you how to upgrade your kernel, important, since the (rather obvious) error message is telling you that you need a newer kernel. Beyond that, 2.6 works much better than 2.4 in general, and will save you considerable headaches.
But why anyone would even bother helping you at this point is beyond me, your attitude is terrible. You clearly don't know what you are doing, and yet when people try to give you advice to help you along you tell them they are "sending you in the wrong direction". Perhaps your best direction at this point is off of these forums, so that you stop wasting people's time.

Attitude is the first thing that needs to change! We are here to assist you when you reach out for help. You obviously wanted advice but very selective as to who and what. If you know the answer then why request help?

So you couldn't install the slackpkg but obviously you are aware of pkgtool. So why didn't you use pkgtool to install the glibc?
You can filter out what you don't want to respond too instead of assaulting. You need to remember that everyone has a different way of looking at or troubleshooting a problem. That includes you!
So to bring this back, install the correct glibc using pkgtool from the source of choice.
I got the problem solved. None of the advice above was correct or helpful. Some of it was totally wrong and caused big problems. The least harmful was the advice that missed the point. What I learned here is not to trust the advice I get unless I can verify it.
The problem with "kernel too old" is actually simply a date stamp problem and wasn't real. Svgalib runs fine without changing it or the kernel.

And you solved the problem HOW?
Easy to point the wrong here but failure too point out your means to the solution says a lot.
No one is sitting behind or beside you to watch your every move so as to find out what YOU are doing wrong therefore don't shift the blame.
As others have stated; we are here to assist whenever possible. No 0ne-800-TEK-Line here! GNU/Support!
