cannot display video mode

I have just installed slackware version 10.0 on my machine. I have gone through the x.org (xfree86 in older versions) configuration and after i finished it i wrote (saved) the .conf file. I then used the "startx" command and it said the screen had writing on it that said - "cannot display video mode".

I have an onboard graphics card but not sure of memory size. I am also using an LCD monitor if that matters.

Does anybody know what i need to do to change this problem?

thanks

Maybe it's a refresh rate problem (due to LCD). Try using: X -configure
That will try to make a configuration for you.

I have gotten past the "cannot display video mode" message by tweaking the .conf settings a little bit but now the color display is all messed up. instead of seeing the kde screen i am just seeing colorful vertical lines all across the monitor.

Grab your monitor's manual and take a look at the vertical refresh rate and horizontal sync rate
(or search them on the net)
