cannot configure ethernet

Hi, I'm new to Slackware, up until now my linux experience has been with Ubuntu. I cannot configure the pc to connect to the internet.

My motherboard is an asus p4p800s-x.
I ran a complete install of Slackware 12.1 (kernel 2.6.24.5-smp), and i have followed the HOWTO in /usr/doc/Linux-HOWTOs and Ethernet-HOWTO.

lpsci gives the ethernet controller as
Realtek Semiconductor RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+ (rev10)

and the HOWTO says the driver name is 8139too.

I have put in /etc/modules.conf the following:
alias eth0 8139too

and after a reboot, dmesg | grep eth0
gives
eth0: Realtek RTL8139 at 0xd800, 00:11:d8:e6:90:1c, IRQ 21
eth0: Identified 8139 chip type 'RTL-8101'
eth0: link up, 100Mbps, full-duplex, lpa 0x45E1
eth0: no IPv6 routers present
eth0: link down
eth0: link up, 100Mbps, full-duplex, lpa 0x45E1
eth0: link down
eth0: link up, 100Mbps, full-duplex, lpa 0x45E1
eth0: link down
eth0: link up, 100Mbps, full-duplex, lpa 0x45E1

Does this mean it is being detected correctly or not? I am now lost! The HOWTO then says to check that the IRQ number is correct, but i cannot read on the motherboard what the number should be. If someone can help me with the next step i would be very grateful.

Looks like your ethernet card is humming nicely.
What you probably forgot is to configure that interface. Read the network configuration chapter of the Slackware Book for more information.
