It looks like it's telling you to upgrade your binutils package. Since you're using Slackware 10.1, you can get it from ftp://ftp.slackware.com/pub/slackwar...0.2-i486-2.tgz, although it's probably better to use a mirror.
I pressed submit here instead of preview - and shouldn't have submitted at all after reading the full list of what went wrong... Sorry about that.

Actually I'm using Slackware 10.2 and the binutils is adequate. I don't know what the problem is, it is a fresh stock installation of 10.2

it errored on not finding the assembler
(which is part of binutils)
also, you might want to add some flags
to configure once you get the assembler in

Odd that the compile didn't like your binutils. I installed mplayer last night after becoming tired of xine. I'm also using 10.2.
I did: ./configure --enable-gui
make
su
password
checkinstall
And the other stuff in the README in the required sequence, and it worked perfectly, except for the gui which needed this stuff to launch on my machine:
/usr/local/bin/gmplayer dvd://1 -skin Corelian -fontconfig -vo xv
