Cannot change screen resolution (atir 3) in slackware 10

i'm having a problem in changing my screen resolution. in windows i'm using 1152x84 but here it's only 800x600!

monitor: gateway vx700
video (built-in): ATI 3D Rage Pro (atir3)

i hv tried other instructions from other websites like putting the correct HorizSync and VertRefresh but it doesn't wurk.
btw, i'm just a newbie so please bear w/ me

make sure to get your exact horizontal and verticle sync frequencies, then edit xorg.conf accordingly.

Maybe you need to install video card drivers?

Hello,

as root you need to edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf.
Go to the very end of the config and look for the "Screens' section.

You want to edit the resolutions for the Subsection that is set as default.
My DefaultDepth is 24, so anything in the Depth 24 SubSection will affect the resolution.

See how I have multiple resolutions specified? The one on the far left is where it starts.
Ctrl+Alt + or - (on the number pad) will cycle through the resolutions.

So editing that file and change the resolution, should fix it.
You can set the same resolution all the way across, but you need to to be specified 4 times.

i already placed the correct HorizSnyc and VertRefresh on the monitor section... before i posted my question

anyway username17, i wanna ask why the DEVICE in my xorg.conf's section is VESA FRAMEBUFFER...? i don't see any "ATI 3D Rage Pro" which is my video adapter accdg to windows 98

maybe c_olin3404 is right... i need a driver for may video.
Besides the fact that i can't get a higher resolution, when i tried to view an mpeg in a media player, it can't display the video nicely...

do anyone knows where can i download the approproiate driver for my video?

Yeepee!!! I fixed it and I now have 1152x864 resolution!!!!
I just changed the DefaultDepth in the Screen section from 24 and 16...

Glad you got it fixed.

Just to answer your question about the device, that can be named whatever you want.
If you went through xorgconfig it prompts you to namr the video card.
I named mine the model of my video card, but you can call it whatever you want.
