Cannot boot Slack 11.0 with huge26.s modules
 

I have been trying to install Slack 11.0 on a Toshiba M115 laptop (SATA hard drive) using the huge26.s kernel. The problem is that after installing the 2.6.17.13 modules, I can no longer boot properly. The system begins booting and then hangs at:

cs: IO port probe 0x3e0-0x4ff

This message shows up shortly after pcmcia probing.

I am unfamiliar with this part of the boot process. Is there some part of the boot process that needs to be disabled? Or am I missing something real basic.

This isn't really an answer but a possible work around. I had problems installing with huge26. In the end I installed 2.4 sata which gave me a working sytem then installed the 2.6 packages from the installation disc.

Thanks for the suggestion. I have already tried this approach. Same results, no improvement.

Have you made in initrd?

I think 'cs' is card services - do you have anything plugged into PCMCIA slots during booting? If so, can you try it after removing the cards? If it works, maybe you don't have modules compiled for one of your cards. It's a little odd though - I'd have thought it would just ignore what it didn't recognise.

Googling for cs IO port probe returned plenty of hits for people with weird messages at that point while booting, but I didn't see any problems with the PC hanging because of it. Do you have pcmcia-cs-3.2.8-i486-3 and pcmciautils-014-i486-2 installed?

if you chose the 'huge26.s' as your kernel on the post-installation of slackware 11, i believe there's no need to mkinitrd.. or am i wrong ?

Nope your correct. I'm using huge26.s without an initrd. It has support for the most common file systems built in.

I can verify this as well. I also have a Toshiba M115 although mine is the S1064. Something with this laptop does not play well with udev. I can't remember the specifics for each kernel, I attempted to install slackware 11 at least 8 times. With the default kernel it would freeze at something about cardmgr, with kernel 2.6.17 and .18 it would freeze at the cs: IO port probe 0x3e0-0x4ff. I had no card in the pcmcia slot on any of the installations. I ended up having to install with hotplug disabled and then it would finish booting. One other note, the 2.6 kernels would boot completely initially until I installed their respective header and module package, then it would freeze.
I have installed other distros with no issues, but one similarity with all of them is during the boot process I am giving errors that involve pci allocation region, there are four of them which may be playing a part in this. Could the original poster verify if he is also getting these pci region messages.
