Can you install Slackware from a rescue console?

I have a server that I lease month to month and have for many years. It currently runs on Slackware64 14.1. I'd like to wipe it out and install Slackware64 14.2 or the next 14.3/15 when it comes out.

When things go wrong on the server I have a rescue console I can log into to fix things.

When I am ready to make the changeover, can it be done through the rescue console? Has anyone tried this before on a remote server?

I can easily ask for the company to reprovision the server, but Slackware is not listed in the OS list anymore. I am waiting for a response from them to find out if they will do it for me. If not, I could download everything to the secondary drive, wipe out the first drive and run setup.

Any hints or tips?

James

Hello James,

this article could give some clues:
https://blog.microlinux.fr/dedibox-slackware-14-2/
It's in French because the author, Nicolas Kovacs, works in France.

If I understand well he describes a context very similar to yours.

It's possible to install by hand using the SW install CD in cli mode. All can be done by hand. But you still need access to the metal. Does the remote console of your infrastructure allow this? If not I'd tftpboot over nfs and then manually install that way.

Hi,

This one more reminder for me to write up the howto install Slackware on online.net Dedeibox machines.
Well, it's been pending since the end of 2016, but that day is approaching ;-)

Hi,

I finally managed to put the text together.
You can find it here: Install Slackware on an online.net Dedibox BareMetal Server.
