can you access these media? gxine; embedded links;
Hello! Back when I used windoze I frequented this web site: http://actualidad.terra.es/nacional/parlamento/ which contains an embedded video of the Spanish Parliament. I have succeeded at getting my soundcard to work in my Dell Inspiron 1150 laptop, using ALSA. (I also recompiled the kernel with "*" for sound support and nothing selected under that. Perhaps it would have been more efficient to use "M", not sure.) Can any of you get the moving sound/picture there? What's your Slackware setup?
Anyway, when I click on that news link I get a still box with something about gxine in it. Also, on http://www.elpais.es there are links to radio stations, such as Cadena Ser. These links are embedded in the web page. There is often an error message about redirection not being permitted. The same holds with their CNN+ link (which I think is subscriber only). What is the answer to these links that are embedded, so that one doesn't have access to the true URL of the media?

First page works ok with firefox+mplayer plugin
Second page sort of hung with CONECTANDO...
I always had problems with xine plugin and found mplayer far superior

Incidentally even basic links (not embedded ones) are working in only a very spotty way. For example, these are not presently coming up at all:
http://www.rtve.es/rne/envivo.htm
I had them working this morning, but now the RealPlayer either comes up and does nothing, or it doesn't even come up. Very mysterious. I recently tried to compile kernel 2.6. Do you suppose it has something to do with that? Even yesterday, though, prior to my kernel attempts, the sound would only come up about one in 5 times. I'd have to keep re-trying to get the signal to sound on the computer.
The error in particular is that RealPlayer either says nothing in the status bar, or it says "Connecting to www.rtve.es" (or perhaps 'contacting...'). But the site is accessible. Mozilla, e.g., asks what I should do with the file; it was thus able to verify the type of file, hence it is accessible. And sometimes, when using Mozilla (at times I use the command line e.g. mydir/bin/RealPlayer/realplay url) sometimes RealPlayer doesn't even appear after selecting what to do with the file, with realplay being the chosen option.

Real isn't working for me either on that last page, although real player opens, so I would suggest it's a problem with the webpage or ram files.
If you compile your own kernel you will normally have to reinstall alsa afterwards - either from source or use the correct alsa version modules from extra cd/slackware site.

After my 2.6.16.1 compile and test run (there were some problems) I checked sound in Kcontrol, Sound & Multimedia, Sound System, Test Sound, and sound was there.
As for those ram files on the web site www.rtve.es/rne I found them working earlier today, so it's rather strange. I know people get multimedia things working on slackware but I may have to abandon some of my hopes, and keep a windoze toy nearby for hearing various news outlets. Bummer! I just don't know how much longer I can afford to keep playing. RealPlay works, then not, without any real basis for understanding why. I haven't installed mplayer yet. From http://www.mplayerhq.hu/design7/info.html it looks like it can handle realaudio, so perhaps that will be another trial. Alas my mouse isn't working properly at the moment...
