Can we drop firefox?
 

It just geting worse and worse. Firefox becaming overbloated piece of software. Seems developer of firefox are decided to make user life more and more difficult. I decided to look for replacement. But essentially don't support something which is bad.

You may and can drop firefox, using removepkg, or simply not use it.

But as there are users not sharing your opinion about it, I doubt that it will be dropped from Slackware unless because of a major and unsolved security issue.

I think overbloated software is security issue. It is only matter of time.

Feel free to drop it, but don't ask for it to be taken away from me or others (as part of the default installation) because you don't like it anymore. Do you have a problem using one of the other browsers in the default installation, or installing another browser?

That's a broad statement. Be more specific. And are you sure you support nothing which is bad? ;)



I get that you're writing out of frustration. FF and Mozilla annoy me sometimes, both in running FF and in the decisions the organization makes and how it makes them.

But FF is still my main and favourite browser, with Chromium or Chromium-based browsers as my main backups. Some sites don't work well (or at all) on FF, others don't on Chromium-based ones. I like to have the selection.

You can always use a text browser like Lynx!

Firefox just blown up. How much it took to me? I opened it twice. Yeah now it opens but is unresponsive, you can't close it with close icon. I can't browse. entering address is doing nothing. I can enter address in address bar press enter and nothing happens. Now I will have to spend some time to recover saved passwords. What is to like about? It is just one big piece of ...And seems firefox developers are in euphoria - so for sure it is not the end of improvements to make browsing faster, easier and more secure. As well you can install ticking bomb on computer.

Edit: after update firefox started and welcome page says don't worry you will loose nothing . My blood went cold. If there is no need to worry why to tell don't worry it will be ok?

I've used firefox for years, at first as a alternative to Microsoft whatever.
Recently I've been using Vivaldi with an occasional reversion to Firefox because of
my thus-far-unfamiliarity with Vivaldi. Vivaldi seems better for me in general but
some things are still more convenient in Firefox. Vivaldi is faster, more powerful,
and rather free from the progressively increasing goofiness of the firefox crowd.
I plan to use Firefox less and less.

What is included/not included in Slackware isn't too much concern to me
since I can add what ever I am willing to add and Slackware agrees to let me do that.

Your FF problems are indeed odd( a corrupted profile?). I suggest that you try Chrome, Vivaldi, etc. etc.
I like and use Firefox, Chrome, and other browsers. Firefox is a must have for any Linux distribution. As others have mentioned you free to remove FF. I doubt that Mr. Volkerding would consider removing FF.

I would try to switch off all the plugins/extensions, probably one of them is the reason....

How do you suppose I can do that now? From inside firefox I can't as I posted it does not respond. Nothing is working. All this happened when I tried to set as default earlier profile. I updated firefox. Started. It gave me information about profiles. So I started my earlier profile in new web browser. But I was not happy of idea to run two instances of firefox. So I tried to make default my earlier profile. I was hoping firefox after changing default profile would start as I customized it. Instead of it does not work at all. I don't know how these profiles are created. At this moment I suspect every update would create new profile. Everyone who is running 78 esr can look at its own profiles. Just open browser and in address bar put about: profiles. If someone is eager to test just do what I have done and try to set earlier profile as default. Perhaps something is wrong with my computer.

Thanks it worked - I can run now firefox but I lost all my settings. I think this why they warned about to loose nothing.

I don't know what is corrupted profile but why if any firefox would be not capable to detect corrupted profile? If this would be the case then every corrupted profile would be security issue. Just corrupt user profile and you are done. Firefox would blindly start such profile.

Next time you come across an issue, try to investigate why instead of blaming the software. Reading this could help.

@igadoter - you made my day. I don't like firefox -> let's prevent everyone else from using firefox. I've been using firefox for years, I also use it on my phone and it works great, Firefox Sync works great, Nano Adblocker works great, Tridactyl works great. Long live firefox!
