can software be easily uninstalled

I installed Apache server as per a co-worker just to see how the program was compared to what he was using to host our web page. He has tested and played and now I want to remove it. I don't know if I can just go around deleting all of the directory's that I think it used or what. That's what I'm asking how do I get rid of this program short of doing a wipe of the hard drive and reinstalling the OS.

How was it installed?

wass29 02-10-2003 02:38 PM

I installed it as per the directions, Basiclly I just ran configure ; make ; make install ; Like you do with most programs that I've tried to install. I've just never tried to uninstall anything.

If you didn't' delete the source tree it should be fine to run
Code:

make uninstall
Most current tarballs will have that feature implemented.

Cheers,
Tink

Yep, running `make uninstall` in the source directory should do it.

is the source directory the one where I installed the software from? or is it the directory created by the make install command? Also to conserve space after I get it uninstalled do I have to go back and delete alot of folders files etc........

wass29 02-10-2003 04:14 PM

when i try "make uninstall" from several different directorys where I think I installed from all I get is an error that reads

"make: *** No rule to make target 'uninstall'. Stop"

I don't know if this is because I am in the wrong directory or what...

Yep ... I haven't installed apache from source yet, though.
If the "make uninstall" didn't work you're probably out of luck.

If you, however, (being a slackware user and all :}) installed
it from a Slackware tarball everything should be just dandy,
just go to /var/log/packages and do your
removepkg apa<TAB><ENTER>

Tink
