Can not start Gnome or KDE

Here's the story, I am currently using fluxbox, but would like to try Gnome/KDE/other window managers as well.

I have Fluxbox as default right now.

When I try to start Gnome (gnome-session from CLI ), I get this message:
Code:
(gnome-session:3905): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display:
And when I type startkde, I get this:
Code:
croaker@somewhere:~$ startkde
xsetroot: unable to open display ''
xset: unable to open display ""
xset: unable to open display ""
xset: unable to open display ""
xsetroot: unable to open display ''
startkde: Starting up...
startkde: Running kpersonalizer...
kwin: cannot connect to X server
kpersonalizer: cannot connect to X server
(line above continued until ^c is used)
I would like to try out a few more window managers, besides Gnome, KDE, Fluxbox, and Blacxbox.

What I would like to know is if there if there is a script, so I can choose which window manager to use when I type 'startx'.

What I want to do is explore different wm's, and hopefully find something I reallly like. Thanks.

You can use a Session Manager, such as GDM, KDM or XDM.
To do that you edit /etc/inittab and find:
Code:
# Default runlevel. (Do not set to 0 or 6)
id:3:initdefault:
and change the 3 to a 4.
