Can I/How do I remove artsd from KDE 3.5.1

artsd causes a crash/error for ordinary users on my Slack 10.1/2.6.15.5/KDE 3.5.1 setup - it works fine for root.

Can I remove artsd entirely from the system?

Thanks, __spc__

unfortunately, i have almost the same specification as yours, Slack 10.2 (current), kernel 2.6.15.5, KDE 3.5.1, but arts is working fine here. Have you upgraded to the latest version??

if you want to remove arts, just type removepkg arts and it will be removed

you can't remove it without most kde apps whinning about it
so just do this as root: chmod -x /opt/kde/bin/artsd
that will stop artsd from loading and the other apps wont complain

Thanks for that.

My issue for artsd is that it works fine for root, but crashes for users. Why is that?! Surely it's a permission thing?

I get the same, fresh install of slackware 10.2, went to the slackware web site and got the packages for kde 3.5.1 from -current. Needed to upgrade the packages for X as well but arts crashes after logi of a normal user.

as far as i remember, i never run alsaconf after upgrading KDE, but it's worth to try. BTW, i'm using Piter Punk's packages on udev (0.84) and several other packages in order to compile the 2.6.15.5. Hope this helps

perhaps because you have used dbus and HAL
i'm not using it for my system as udev is working fine

i don't know about this, but in Piter Punk's website, he said that
Quote:
with kernel 2.6.15 (and above) udev can listen directly the events given by some devices, through netlink. Sysfs provides a interface to send events, when we wrote to "uevent" file in some device directory, one event will be sent and udev can catch this event and do something. This is the great idea, now udev can be used to handle all device node creation AND module loading. The hotplug binary is no more and all configuration can be done using only udev.rules.
i'm using his packages and it worked fine in my system, without dbus and hal and of course hotplug. Everything was taken care by udev alone
